Mrs. Anna Elizabeth Read Came to Madison County in 1858
Madison county lost one of its final few pioneer women last Thursday in the death, at the Soldier's home in Marshalltown, of Mrs. Anna Elizabeth Read. She was 96 years of age, and had been a resident of Madison county since 1858.
Mrs. Read was the former Anna Elizabeth Bardrick and was born Jan. 5, 1847, near Springfield, Ill. After coming to this county as a child, her entire life was spent here. At the age of 13 years she united with the Winterset Methodist church and she became over a long period of years, one of its most active and influential members. She served as church steward, Sunday school superintendent and class leader. She was a charter member of the Madison county Holiness association attending its annual camp meetings and conventions. She was affiliated with the Woman's Relief corps and the Women's Christian Temperance union.
She was married March 27, 1864 to Thomas Read. They were the parents of five children. The oldest son died at the age of six years, and the youngest died in 1940. Her husband died nearly 30 years ago.
She is survived by the two daughters, Mrs. Mary Lowden and Mrs. Anna H. Bowlsby, both of Winterset; one son, Charles W. Read of Osawatomie, Kan.; 16 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; and one great, great grandson.
Funeral services were held Sunday from the Winterset Methodist church, in charge of the Rev. W. A. Samp, assisted by the Rev. L. F. Davis. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
