William Manthei was born in Poland March 7, 1841 and died at his home in Winterset, Feb. 15, 1920 at the age of 78 years, 11 months and 8 days. He came to the United States at the age of 26 and located in Chicago, later going to Philadelphia, then to Wisconsin and from there to Des Moines. He came to Madison county and in 1876 was married to Mary Vogel. To this union four children were born: Edward of Winterset, Otto of Montezuma, Carl C. of Des Moines and Mrs. Olva Block of Brooklyn, Iowa.
Mr. Manthei was a stone mason by trade but has been retired for more than 15 years and has lived in Winterset. He was a lifelong church member of the Methodist church, where he was a faithful attendant until his sight failed him,since which time he has been confined to his home.
He leaves to mourn his death, the four children and distant relatives and friends. The funeral services were held from the home on Monday afternoon by Rev. Jackson Giddens and interment made in the Winterset cemetery.
