WintersetCharles E. Peterson, 68, passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 16, surrounded by his loving family.
Charles was born in Winterset, Iowa, July 3, 1938 to Clark E. and Lena G. Peterson. He graduated from Winterset High School and then attended Iowa State University majoring in aeronautical engineering. After that he studied art in New Orleans, then was a fashion design artist in New York City. A member of Phi Betta Kappa, he graduated with honors from Drake University, receiving his master's degree in Liberal Arts. From Iowa he moved to California where he taught Freshman Composition at the University of California at Riverside while studying for his Ph.D. He was also assistant editor of Dairyman Magazine.
In 1969, he returned to Iowa where he worked as a Soil Conservation Technician for 25 years of Federal Service with the Natural Resources Conservation District and eight years with the Madison County Soil and Water Conservation District. He worked for the Natural Resources Conservation Services for 13 years and then retired in 2002.
Charles was a man of many interests and talents. He loved reading and always said you could go anywhere in the world through books. He was a talented painter, photographer, sculptor and builder and loved classical music. He had all the patience in the world in order to make his work as near perfect as possible. He enjoyed nature, and had a heart for every living creature, never understanding why anyone would want to kill any animal for sport. He was well informed and could carry on a discussion on almost any subject; but particularly liked talking about politics and world affairs.
If ever there was a kind, gentle, wise and forgiving person it was Charles.
His parents preceded him in death by only a few months. Those left to cherish his memory are his sisters, Patty (Don) Eyerly of Winterset, Donna (Dave) Speed of Carlisle and Jeanie (Ron) Christensen of Norwalk. He will be hugely missed by his nieces and nephews: Don Eyerly Jr., Darcy White, Dusty Eyerly, Dewey Eyerly, Lori Carrara, Royale Charles, Lee Carreon, and R. C. Christensen; great nieces and nephews: Kendra, Tashie, Colton, Haley, Tia, Brooke, Dani, Patience, Casey, Anthony, Brock, Carter, Courtney, Ashlyn, Shane, Andrew, Melanie, Salena, Joshie and Abby as well as many friends.
A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset. His family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Burial of his cremains will be at the Barney Cemetery in Madison County.
