Roberta Gilpin Shively, 79, of Casper, Wyo., died after a brief illness, Oct. 14, 1997, at Wyoming Medical Center. Memorial services were Oct. 18, at the First United Methodist Church in Casper, Wyo. Cremation has taken place.
She was born Dec. 8, 1917 in Winterset, to Robert S. and Eva (Gilpin) Cooper. She was raised in Winterset and graduated from Winterset High School. She lived in Iowa until 1943 when she moved to Wyoming. She joined the Women's Army Corps at the beginning of World War II and served with the Army Intelligence at the American Embassy in London and achieved the rank of staff sergeant. She also worked for the Girl Scouts of the United States and as a deputy county clerk. She graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1962 with a bachelor of arts degree. On Sept. 23, 1950, she married Sanford M. Shively in Casper, where they made their home. She taught French and English from 1962 to 1981 when she retired. She was an ardent supporter of public education and was active with several of her local education programs. She wa a member of ADK Sorority and was a 61-year member of the P. E. O. Sisterhood, as well as serving as president of her chapter. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels as a driver.
Surviving relatives include her husband; two sons, Mark Shively of Laramie, Wyo., Rob Shively of Casper, Wyo.; two daughters-in-law; four granddaughters; one grandson; and two cousins.
