J. W. SHEARER DIED HERE ON THURSDAY

Widely Known Resident of Madison County Passed At Home Here

John Walter Shearer, well-known resident of Winterset and Madison county, died at his home on East Washington street, last Thursday morning, August 22nd. Mr. Shearer who was 52 years of age had been in poor health for several months, and had spent several weeks at the Mayo Bros. hospital in Rochester, Minn., this summer.

Mr. Shearer who was the son of Ira and Etta Shearer was born in Norfolk, Neb., Sept. 26, 1887, but he was brought to Peru by his parents when he was three months of age, and since then he has made his home in Peru, and in later years in Winterset.

He was graduated from the Peru high school and completed a business course at Simpson college in Indianola. He returned to Peru to assist his uncle, William Barbary in the hardware business, which he carried on for a number of years following the death of Mr. Barbary. At the age of 21 he was elected mayor of Peru and since then he had taken an active part in furthering all projects for the good of the community.

On Feb. 22, 1910 he was married to Miss May Smith of Winterset, and they were the parents of three children: Gene, who died in October 1935, and John and Marjorie who reside with their mother.

For the past seventeen years, Mr. Shearer had been a salesman for DeLaval Separator company of Chicago, Ill.

The deceased is survived by his wife and two children, John and Marjorie of Winterset, and two brothers, Claude and Clyde Shearer of Peru.

The Rev. J. H. Machlan conducted his funeral services at the Methodist church in Peru Sunday afternoon at 2:30 and burial was made in the Peru cemetery.
