John Devine was born in Longport, Ireland, in 1825, and died March 11, 1908, at the age of 83 years, 8 months and 10 days.
Mr. Devine came to America at the age of 19. He was married to Ellen O'Loughlin in Fondulac, Wisconsin, at the age of 22. To this union were born six children, five girls and one boy.
He was a soldier in the war of the rebellion, a volunteer of Company F, 45th regiment of Wisconsin. Received his discharge at Nashville, July 17, 1865, having served his country one year.
He came with his family to Madison county, Iowa, in 1875, where he made his home until his death. Mrs. Devine died in 1888. His daughter, Catharine, died in the same year.
He was a Christian, being a member of the Roman Catholic church. He was a good citizen, a kindly character, the influence of which was manifest wholesome on his children.
He leaves five children to mourn his loss, Mrs. Cal Church, Mrs. Jennie Van Meter, Susie, Mrs. J. White and Edward.
He was laid to rest by the side of his wife and daughter in Oakland cemetery on the evening of March 12, 1908.
