Son of Swiss Immigrant Was Long-Time Resident at Macksburg
Calvin C. Schutz, one of the oldest residents of the Macksburg community, died Friday, Feb. 15, at his farm home just three-fourths of a mile west of his birthplace. He was 79 years of age.
Mr. Schutz was one of the twin sons of Andrew and Ellen Hatter Schutz. He was born June 24, 1872, in a log cabin on the farm where his father settled when he came to this county from Switzerland.
He was married to Bertha Means, on March 26, 1896. They were the parents of five children. His wife died in 1946.
Mr. Schutz' entire life was spent near Macksburg. He had led an active life until his final illness. He obtained his education at the Macksburg school, and Des Moines university. He was a member of the Methodist church and the Odd Fellows lodge.
He leaves the five children, Curtis F. Schutz and Mrs. Fern Moore of Macksburg, Mrs. Esther Varley of Stuart, and Mrs. Marie Wood and Calvin A. Schutz of Macksburg; 39 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; his twin brother, Alvin Curt Schutz and another brother, Fred Schutz, both of Macksburg; a brother Elmer Schutz of Lincoln, Nebr.; and a sister, Mrs. Alice Eivins of Macksburg.
Funeral services were held Sunday from the Macksburg Methodist church, in charge of a former pastor, the Rev. Lawerence Athey, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Wilkins. Burial was made in the Moon cemetery.
