Stricken by Fatal Heart Attack Monday at Home Here
John J. McLaughlin of Winterset, a prominent Iowa farm leader, died at his home here Monday afternoon. Death came suddenly to the well-known Winterset man, as a result of a heart attack. He was 48 years of age.
Mr. McLaughlin was a member of the Iowa state central committee of the Production Marketing administration. He had long been identified prominently with this government farm organization. In 1934, when the old Corn-Hog organization was first formed, he served as the first chairman in Lee township. When the first county AAA central committee was formed, he was named as a member. In 1935 and 1937 he was vice chairman of the county AAA central committee and was elected county chairman in 1937. He served in that capacity until Jan. 1, 1939, when he resigned to accept a position as district field man for the organization.
In 1944 he was named as a member of the three-man state central committee, on which he continued to serve until his death.
Mr. McLaughlin was a life-long resident of Madison county. He was born on a farm in Lee township on May 6, 1903, a son of John H. and Julia McLaughlin. On June 24, 1925, he was married to Alice McCusker of near Churchville. They made their home in Lee township until moving to Winterset in 1940.
He received his education at St. John's school in Des Moines, and at Iowa State college in Ames, where he received his degree in 1921.
In addition to his wife, his is survived by seven children: Mrs. Patricia Corkrean of Lee township; Richard McLaughlin, at home, Mrs. Helen Morehouse of North Platte, Nebr., and Celine, John, Jane and Michael McLaughlin at home. He also leaves his mother, Mrs. Julia McLaughlin of Winterset; a brother, Clarence McLaughlin of Ottumwa; four sisters, Mrs. Susie Lynch of Cumming, Mary Ann McLaughlin of Des Moines, Mrs. Elen Davitt of Fairfield, and Mrs. Florence Sullivan of Eagle Grove; and two grandchildren.
Rosary services for the deceased were held Tuesday evening from Richards Funeral home. funeral services were held Wednesday morning from St. Joseph's Catholic church in Winterset, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. J. J. Judge. Burial was made in St. Patrick's cemetery in Lee township.
