Death Of MISS PENINA MOORE

With the closing of the life of Miss Penina Moore on last Saturday, Dec. 9th, there passed away one of the old time leaders in pioneer education.

With fifty years of school teaching on her life's record, her influence can hadly be estimated, for the teacher in early days was a strong force, mentally, morally and socially. Admired, respected and valued as a friend, Miss Moore left her impression on the lives of many men and women of Madison county. Born in Belmont county, Ohio in 1833, she came to this county in 1857, continuing here in the profession in which she had begun work in her native state.

For the past seven years, Miss Moore had been afflicted with creeping paralysis, which rendered her bedfast, her death occurring in Clarinda.

Burial services were conducted this morning by Dr. J. S. Corkey at the Presbyterian church at 10 o'clock. Burial was in Winterset cemetery.

PENINA MOORE

Penina Moore, daughter of John and Rachel Moore, was born in Belmont county, Ohio, Nov.1, 1833 and lived to be a little more than 83 years of age, dying Nov. 9, 1916.

She received her education in the public schools at Belmont county, and attended the high school at Barnesville, Ohio, to better equip herself for her life work. She commenced teaching when quite young and continued her profession until late in life, continuing in active work as a teacher for nearly half a century.

She came to Madison county in 1857 and the remainder of her life, with the exception of one year back in the old home in Ohio, was spent in this county. She was one of the pioneer teachers and had a genuine love for her work, putting her whole heart and soul into it. In fact, she taught school in her mind until the very last. She used to visit in the homes of her pupils and did all she could to comfort them in sickness and trouble.

She taught by example, as well as by precept and started scores of young people on the high road to success. Her life was an active one until about 18 years ago when she was afflicted with rheumatism and from that time was never able to walk without a crutch. Seven years ago last May she was taken down with paralysis and had been bed fast ever since. Early in hr sickness, she expressed her willingness to meet her Savior and said she was prepared to go when the call came.

She is the last but one of a family of ten children; her brother, Samuel Moore of Piedmont, S. D. surviving her. She leaves a large circle of relatives and friends, who appreciated her life, cared for her in her long illness and will always remember her for her sterling worth.
