DOROTHY E. SMID, Creston

Dorothy E. Smid, 91, of Creston died of cardiac arrest April 24, 2000, at Greater Community Hospital in Creston.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 28, at the Creston First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom Woodin officiating. Burial was at Graceland Cemetery.

Dorothy Smid was born Aug. 7, 1908, near Macksburg to F. Lee and Mate E. (Terry) Cochran. She graduated from Macksburg High School in 1926 and Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls. On May 5, 1928, she married Ino S. Smid in Winterset. She was a homemaker and secretaary for her husband (a school superintendent) at various schools in Iowa. They lived in Central City, Rodman, Hancock, Schleswig and other southwest Iowa towns before moving to Creston in 1954.

Dorothy was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Methodist Women's Circle 2, World War I Auxiliary, Federated Garden Club and a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters and four brothers (three in infancy).

She is survived by a son, Russell I. Smith (wife Ruth) of Fort Dodge; two daughters, Betty Jo Walters (husband Mathew) of West Covina, Calif., and Aneta Van Sickle (husband David) of West Lafayette, Inc.; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Powers Funeral Home in Creston.
