Col. Anson J. Smalley of Pomona, Calif., member of a formerly prominent Winterset family, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 1963, at a hospital there. Death resulted from a heart condition. He was 68 years of age.
Colonel Smalley was the eldest of the four sons of Mr. and Mrs. William Smalley, He was born in Winterset Oct. 28, 1894, and his early life was spent in this community.
He graduated with scholastic honors from Winterset high school, where he was also an outstanding football player. He attended Grinnell college at Grinnell, where he made the Iowa college all state football team as an end. He graduated from Grinnell with the class of 1921.
His college career was interrupted by service in the U. S. Army during the Mexican border war and World War I. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in France during World War I.
Colonel Smalley moved to Ontario, California in 1921 as a teacher in Chaffey High school there. He retired from teaching in 1961, after 40 years.
He helped organize, and was named commanding officer of a California National Guard company in Ontario in 1930, serving until 1940 when his unit was activated into federal service. He served during World War II as a colonel commanding a regiment of the 40th division. He retired from military service in 1952.
Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Lena Smalley of Pomona; a son, Jack A. Smalley of Victorville, Calif., two grandchildren; and a brother John L. Smalley of Long Beach.
_________________________Coordinator's note: He is verified as living in Winterset but has no Madison County Birth Record and his WWI Draft Registration says he was born in Marshalltown. The Draft Registration also states that he has a middle initial but no full middle name.
