Richard L. Helm, 64, of Van Meter, died Dec. 30, 2006, at the Kavanagh House in West Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow, Jan. 4, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset. A visitation will be held today, Jan. 3, from 1 to 8 p.m. at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare; the family will be present to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Central Iowa. Burial of the cremated remains will be held at a later date in the new Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter.
Military honors will be performed by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8142 and American Legion Post 184, both of Winterset.
Richard was born Dec. 3, 1942, in Des Moines, the son of William Arthur and Lila Sylvia (Neve) Helm. He graduated from Tech High in 1961 and briefly attended Iowa State University prior to joining the United States Marines. He served three tours in Vietnam and retired at the rank of Master Sergeant after 21 years. He was married to Geneva Maxson Hawthorne in the Winterset City Park on June 5, 1985. He was a member of Madison County Central Committee for the Republican Party. Richard was a heart transplant recipient in 1994.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Charles Helm.
He is survived by his wife; four sons, Richard Helm Jr. of Des Moines, Larry Helm of Montclair, Calif., Steve Helm of Centerville and Randy Helm of Des Moines; three step-sons, Louis Hawthorne of Memphis, Tenn., Timothy Hawthorne of Des Moines and Troy Hawthorne of San Diego, Calif.; two sisters, Sally Bache and Sylvia Moffett, both of Las Vegas, Nev.; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset.

Richard L. Helm: Died Dec. 30, 2006. Military Graveside Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20, at Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Van Meter. Richard served in the United States Marines for 21 years, retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant.
Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset is in charge of arrangements.
