Former Zelza Sawhill of Near Pitzer Dies in South Dakota
Mrs. Thomas Aitchison, former Madison county resident, died Wednesday, July 4th at the De Smith hospital in South Dakota after a short illness. Mrs. Aitchison, aged 73, the former Zelza Sawhill, had been ill at her home in Iroquois, and was taken to the hospital two days prior to her death.
A daughter of the Rev. James and Martha Sawhill, she was born at the home in the Pitzer community, Aug. 30, 1877. She attended the Madison county schools, and later Monmouth college in Monmouth, Ill. Her marriage to Thomas Aitchison took place on March 23, 1905, and they made their home on a farm in this county until in 1916 when they moved to Iroquois, where they continued to reside, with the exception of two years spent in New York.
In addition to her husband, she leaves two children, James, who resides at home, and Miss Florence Aitchison who is employed in the state welfare office in Pierre, S. Dak. She also leaves two brothers, Wallace Sawhill of Winterset and John Sawhill of Des Moines, who were summoned to South Dakota by her critical illness last Wednesday.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Iroquois last Saturday afternoon and burial was made in the cemetery there.
