Grandson of First Settlers Succumbs at Home in Walnut Township
Last rites for Alvin "Ab" Clark, member of a pioneer Madison county family, were held Monday afternoon at the Richards Funeral home in Winterset.
Mr. Clark died on June 16 at his farm home in Walnut township. He was 71 years of age and had been in poor health for several months.
The son of Rufus and Susan Clark, he was born in Winterset Dec. 18, 1879. His grandparents, Caleb and Ruth Clanton Clark, were the first white settlers of Madison county.
"Ab" Clark was one of a family of eight children. On Feb. 21, 1900, he married Bertha Paullin at Atlantic, Iowa. They returned to Winterset where they made their home for several years while he was an employee of the Clark Monument company.
To this union was born one daughter, now Mrs. Jack Soule of Des Moines. The wife and mother died in 1926.
On March 3, 1928, Mr. Clark married Miss Esther Alexander of Winterset. They were the parents of one daughter, Shirley Ann, who is living at home.
Surviving are his wife, two daughters, one sister, Mrs. Tom McCauley of St. Marys; one brother, Frank Clark of Union township; and several nieces and nephews.
Officiating at the services Monday afternoon was the Rev. A. R. Weed. burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
