Wednesday, April 1, 1953H. R. SLAUGHTER Of Lincoln Township Killed in Farm Accident
H. R. Slaughter, well-known Lincoln township farmer, was instantly killed Saturday afternoon when the tractor he was driving over-turned in a corn field at his farm home about seven miles southwest of Winterset. Death was caused by a crushed chest. He was 57 years of age.
Mr. Slaughter was operating his tractor, pulling a disc, in a field just east of his home, when the accident occurred. He had started to drive the tractor and disc across a small draw in the field. The bottom of the draw was somewhat muddy. The tractor had reached the opposite bank, when the disc hit the muddy spot, and when that happened the tractor reared up on its hind wheels and fell over backward, pinning the driver underneath.
The accident occurred between 3:30 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. Joe McAdow, a neighbor, drove past at 3:30 p.m., and saw Mr. Slaughter working in the field. Fifteen minutes later, Ed Waltz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nick Waltz, drove by the field, and noticed the over-turned tractor. He investigated, and saw the body pinned underneath. He called his father, and authorities were notified. A wrecker from Winterset was used to raise the tractor off the body of its operator.
Mr. Slaughter was born March 12, 1896, at Dana, Iowa. He had been a resident of Madison county for the past 17 years, and was active in his community, serving as township trustee. His religious affiliation was with the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
He was married Feb. 14, 1916 at Boone, to Delpha Meyers, who survives him. In addition to his wife; he leaves two daughters, Mrs. Zelma Tripp of Truro and Mrs. Lela Hamilton of Omaha; one son, Ray Slaughter, at home; six grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Nellie Patterson of Boone; a brother, Harold Slaughter of Chino, Calif.; a half-sister, Mrs. Jessie Ehersole of Pomona, Calif.; and a half-brother, Arthur, of Wells, Mont.
Funeral services were held Tuesday from the Ord church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Earl Travis. Burial was made in the Elmwood cemetery at Minburn.
