Charles Jackson Hayden, son of Nathanial and Mahala Hayden, was born in Madison county near Peru, Iowa, March 13, 1869, and died at his home in Truro, Iowa, January 18, 1951, aged 81 years, 10 months and 5 days.

He was united in marriage to Anna Belle Fields, September 20, 1893. To this union five children were born, four daughters and one son, four of whom preceded their father in death, Viola Glee, Pearle, Mabel and Carol.

Charley, as he was known to all, spent his entire life in Madison county, Iowa, with the exception of one year spent in Union county, Iowa. He was a man of whom everyone speaks the same words, a good neighbor, a friend always ready to help when and where he was needed, a faithful companion, a kind and loving father and grandfather. Although Charley had been in failing health for some time he never complained, bearing his pain with patience. His last suffering was of only a few hours duration bringing his death as a shock to the community.

He leaves to mourn his death his faithful companion of 57 years, one daughter, Mrs. Zoe DeLong of Truro, three grandchildren, two of whom were reared in his home, Tommy Gordon of Des Moines, Iowa, Mrs. Donna Roan of near Adel, Iowa, and Mrs. Kathryn Edwards of Grand River, Iowa, four great-grandchildren, Jerry and Judy Dodd and Tommy Joe and Amanda Kay Roan, and one brother Walter Hayden of Arizona, besides a host of relatives and friends.

Father is gone, a voice is still, his chair is vacant, his foot-steps will be heard no more, but as he crosses the bar he beacons for his fellow ere long, where there are no tears or suffering or death unknown.
