James William Wheeler, the oldest son of America M. and Harriett Wheeler, was born near Linn Grove, Warren county, Iowa, on the 19th day of November, 1856, and departed this life at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Nickle, in St. Charles, on the 28th day of February, 1929, at the age of seventy-two years, three months and nine days.
He came with his parents to South township, Madison county, in the year 1868, settling on the farm now owned and occupied by William Cushing. His education was that afforded at that time the boys and girls in the country schools. From his father he learned the art of farming and stock raising, which profession became his life work.
On the 31st day of March, 1881, he was united in marriage to Miss Nancy Souders, also of South township and they began housekeeping on a farm near St. Charles. Later, he purchased a farm east of St. Charles which he occupied at the time of his death. With the exception of a short time in California, St. Charles and vicinity had been his home for sixty years. One child, a son, Fred Wheeler, was born, who is now living at Riverside, California. His companion was taken by death on the 6th day of September, 1914, and since that time he had lived alone on his farm.
In early life, Mr. Wheeler became a member of the Church of Christ of St. Charles. He was of a genial and quiet disposition, conservative and contented with life as it came, never complaining or finding fault. Honesty, frugality and industry were the dominating characteristics of his life.
He leaves to mourn, his son, Fred, and daughter-in-law, Leah Wheeler, one grandson, Omer, and two granddaughters, Yvetta and Juanita, of Riverside, California; two brothers and five sisters: A. P. Wheeler, of Union township, Madison county; Bruce Wheeler, Mrs. Nellie Capper and Mrs. Minta Fox, of Riverside, California; Mrs. Lizzie Eads and Mrs. Cal H. Ogburn, of Los Angeles, California, and Mrs. May Hightower, of Eagle Rock, California, and a large number of other relatives and a host of friends.
Mr. Wheeler was found sick at his home and brought to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Nickle, one week ago last Saturday, where he was tenderly cared for until death came as a relief from very intense suffering at 9:10 p. m., February 28th.
Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ on Monday, March 4th, at two o’clock, conducted by the Rev. E. E. Parks, of Prairie City, assisted by Rev. F. G. Barnes and Rev. G. E. Carnahan, of St. Charles. Interment was made in the St. Charles cemetery by the side of his departed wife.
