ELIJAH SMITH Funeral Services Monday

Funeral services were held Monday from the Anderson home for funerals for Elijah S. Smith, whose death had occurred Wednesday, April 13, 1960 at Memorial hospital in Winterset. The services were conducted by Primitive Baptist Elder Fred Phipps of LeGrande. Burial was made in the Primitive Baptist cemetery near Winterset.

Mr. Smith was 84 years of age at his death. Most of his life had been spent in Madison county, where he was born Jan. 1, 1876, a son of Asa B. and Mary M. Smith. In 1901 he settled a homestead claim in Oklahoma, but returned here in 1914 and spent the remainder of his life here, with the exception of 10 years in Warren county.

He was a member of the Primitive Baptist church.

He was married in 1909 to Nora B. Cook of Snyder, Okla. They were parents of seven children: Mrs. Lillian Rush of Roseburg, Ore.; Mrs. Lela Marsh of San Diego, Calif.; James D. Smith of Earlham; Mrs. Merle Bruce of Albuquerque, N. Mex.; Leonard Smith of Marshfield, Mo.; John Smith who was killed in military service in 1942; and Lloyd Smith of Green Ridge, Mo.

He also leaves 10 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Nellie Weaver of Ames; and two brothers, Roy A. Smith and Walter A. Smith, both of Winterset.
