CHARLES SMITH, Truro

Charles Edward Smith, 70, of Truro, died of cancer April 20, 1997 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. A memorial service was held for the cremains on May 17 at the Truro Congregational United Church of Christ. The Rev. Richard Harbart officiated the services.

He was born in Marshalltown on Sept. 2, 1916 to Stanley and Evelyn (Schell) Smith. He had attended Catholic Academy in Oregon and Vanport College in Portland, Ore. He married Marjorie Fenimore Durfey on Nov. 5, 1982. He had been a purchasing agent for United Tele; and had been employed by First Interstate Bank for 28 years. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and had also served in the United States Air Force. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in St. Mary's.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Surviving relatives include his wife of Truro; two sons, James Smith of Ontario, Ore., and Scott Smith and wife Marie of Ithaca, N.Y.; two daughters, Kelly Smith Gray and husband Treve of Parkdale, Ore., and Sarah Starnes of Hood River, Ore.; three step-children, Alan Durfey and wife Jane of Indianola, Evan Durfey and wife Laureen of Johnston, and Ted Durfey of Indianola; one sister, Shirley Tucker of Klamath Falls, Ore.; five grandsons; and three step-grandchildren.
