CALVIN SMITH, Winterset

Calvin Lyman Smith, 91, of Winterset died Dec. 25, 2003, at Winterset Care Center South.

A prayer service was held Sunday Dec. 28, at Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset with Pastor Lisa Locoh officiating. Burial was at Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier, Calif.

Cal Smith was born July 5, 1912, in Centerville to George M. and Rosa (Moore) Smith. He grew up in Van Meter. Following graduation from Van Meter High School, he moved to California. Cal had been a mechanic for the City of Los Angeles Water & Power for 30 years, before retiring. He returned to Iowa in 1993. He was first married to Phyllis Burch, who preceded him in death. On May 3, 1993, he married Ida M. Grose at the Worthington United Methodist Church in rural Earlham. He was a member of the Worthington United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Phyllis; a son, David Smith, and a stepdaughter, Marilyn Bown.

He is survived by his wife, Ida M. Smith of Winterset; a stepson, Ron Grose of Macksburg; a stepdaughter, Sandy Brown of Macksburg; a brother, George Smith of Carson City, Nev.; a sister, Dorothy Pritchard of Culver City, Calif.; four grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren.
