William F. Smith, member of a formerly prominent Winterset family, died in the Masonic sanatorium at Bettendorf Monday, June 22, 1953. He was 87 years of age.
Mr. Smith was born Sept. 23, 1865, near Peru, a son of James and Sophia Craven Smith. His father was a Civil War veteran. He married Maude Whedon of Winterset on April 30, 1905.
He was an implement dealer in Winterset, and later in Grinnell. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, and of the Masonic order, in which he received a 50-year membership certificate in 1937. He moved to Iowa City in 1928
Mr. Smith's wife preceded him in death in 1942, and his only son, Prof. Lothrop Smith, a member of the faculty of the State University of Iowa at Iowa City, died in 1949. He is survived by a grandson, Carver H. Smith, a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lothrop Smith, both of Iowa City, and a niece, Mrs. Jane Treece of San Gabriel, Calif.
Funeral services were held Wednesday in Iowa City, and burial will be made in Winterset.
