We learn from the Sidney, Fremont county, Herald, of the death of a pioneer and old resident of Winterset, George A. Smith. Mr. Smith was among the early comers to this county, and lived here until 1864, being engaged in the boot and shoe business. He then removed to Fremont county, where, we understand, he acquired property and became quite well-to-do.

He was born in Baden-Baden, Germany, December 14th, 1817, and hence was in his 78th year at the time of his death. For almost his whole life he was a consistent member, first of the Lutheran an afterwards of the Methodist church.

He was an active member of the Masonic fraternity, and was buried with the funeral ceremonies of that order.
