RICHARD SMITH, Martensdale

Richard Clair Smith, 61, of Martensdale died July 27, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines following heart surgery.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 1, at Norwalk United Methodist Church with the Rev. Duane Madsen officiating. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, July 31, at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola and continuing at the Norwalk United Methodist Church from 5 - 8 p.m. with family receiving friends from 6 - 8 p.m. A Masonic Service will be held at the church at 7 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be at St. Charles Cemetery.

Clair Smith was born Nov. 9, 1941, in South Township, Madison County, to James "Cap" and Ena (Bradshaw) Smith. He received his education in the Truro School District, graduating from Truro High School in 1960. He continued his education, graduating from United Electronics. On Aug. 18, 1963, he married Helen Marie Walker at the Linn Grove United Methodist Church. They resided in Norwalk for two and one-half years before moving to Martensdale 37 years ago. Clair was employed by Standard Register in Des Moines for 15 years and the J. C. Penney Home Store for two years. Currently , he was working as a warehouseman for Citi Card. He was a member of the Martensdale Lions Club (charter member and past district governor), Lions International Youth Exchange Council (20 years), Welfare Masonic Lodge 628 A.F. & A.M. In Norwalk and Norwalk United Methodist Church. He also was a past city councilman and was currently serving as mayor of Martensdale.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, of Martensdale; a daughter, Tami Chance of Cambridge; two sons, Galen Smith and Dennis Smith, both of St. Charles; a sister, Bonnie Kirscher of Osceola; and five grandchildren..
