Mortuary

NANCY JANE GILLELAND

Nancy Jane Nichols was born near Heltonsville, Ind., July 24, 1839 and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. Vincent of Des Moines, July 27, 1923, at the age of 84 years and 3 days.

She was left an orphan when 11 years of age. When 13 years of age, she came to Iowa and was located in Iowa county for two years, after which she came to Madison county, where she lived until 13 years ago, at which time she went to Des Moines.

On Dec. 31, 1860 she was united in marriage to John Paul Jones. Their one child, Charles, died in infancy. Mr. Jones was killed in the civil war.

On Oct. 16, 1866 Mrs. Jones was married to D. W. Gilleland and to this union were born seven children, two children, Jesse and Mrs. Mary Fife, and the companion preceded her in death. The surviving children are: G. W. and O. H. of Winterset; Fred and Mrs. Chas. Fleck of California and Mrs. Vincent of Des Moines.

Mrs. Gilleland united with the Methodist church in early life and continued in that fellowship, her church membership being in the Methodist church at Winterset at the time of her death.

Besides her children she leaves to cherish her memory, 11 grandchildren. A large circle of old friends and neighbors join these through the spirit of tender sympathy.

Funeral services were conducted from the Worthington church Sunday afternoon by E. B. Chancellor, pastor of the Church of Christ at Winterset. Burial was in the Worthington cemetery.
