Nellie F. Smith of Jefferson died Saturday, May 5, 1984 at Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson at the age of 97. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning, May 9, at Hastings Funeral Home in Jefferson with Rev. Donald Frank of First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was at the Scranton Township Cemetery in Scranton.
Born on March 28, 1887, in Greene County near Scranton, she was the daughter of William Henry and Carlottie Clews Thompson. She lived her entire life in Greene County except for six months in St. Charles.
On Oct. 8, 1913, she married Henry W. Smith at St. Charles. They made their home on a farm near Scranton for 28 years before moving to Jefferson.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Jefferson and the WSCS, the Golden Agers Club, and a 72 year member of the Royal Neighbors of America.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in November 1956, five siblings, including two who died in infancy.
Survivors include her daughter Velma Gardner of Jefferson, one granddaughter, one brother, Harley Thompson of Des Moines and one sister, Florence Bruett of Winterset.
