Death Of MARQUIS E. SMITH

Former Banker and Well Known Business Man Passes

Marquis E. Smith, well known resident of Winterset and Madison county died at his home in Winterset, Sunday, October first, 1933, shortly after twelve o'clock. Mr. Smith had been ill with diabetes for several years and nine weeks ago was taken to the Methodist hospital in Des Moines, critically ill with heart complications. His condition improved and after several weeks of treatment he was able to be brought to his home on West South street. The past several weeks he has been able to be at his office. He became critically ill again Saturday night, and died shortly afterwards.

"M. E." as he was familiarly known by his friends and business associates was born in Marshall county, July 22, 1861. He received his education in the Manning schools, and later went to Des Moines to study pharmacy. There he worked for Schmucker & Loper. In the fall of 1890 he bought a drug store in Winterset, which he operated until he became cashier of the Winterset Savings bank, which he helped to organize. He remained with the bank until his health failed. He resigned and devoted his time to his farm interests. Later he became associated with the Federal Land bank as secretary and treasurer of the local association.

On June 21, 1894, he was married to Miss Marion A. McLeod, and to them was born one son, Marquis McLeod Smith. Mr. Smith who was 72 years of age,is survived by his wife, their son and his wife and a grandson, Marquis Smith III. The son and his family came to Winterset during Mr. Smith's illness in July and have been here since then.

The deceased was always public spirited and as long as his health permitted he took part in all community activities. He was a charter member of the Country club, an active member of the Masonic order and the Knights of Pythias, and held office in both lodges. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian church. His pastor the Rev. R. C. Cully conducted his funeral services at Tidrick's funeral home, Tuesday afternoon, October 3 at 2 o'clock. Private interment at the Winterset cemetery.
