Veldeva Morris Rees, 85, died July 27, 2003, of renal failure at Winterset Care Center North.
A memorial mass was held at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday, July 30) at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset with Father Chris Hartshorn officiating. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery in Creston.
Veldeva Rees was born April 1, 1918, in Ringgold County to Louis and Elizabeth (McManus) Vanderpluym. She had resided in Winterset since 1936, having been raised in Ringgold County. In 1938, she married Lewis E. Morris. Following his death in 1967, she later married Bernard E. Rees in 1972. Veldeva had taught in rural schools in Scott and Monroe townships in Madison County. She also had taught school in Warren County and DeSoto. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Altar Society, Rosary Society, and Madison County Democratic Party.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Lewis; her second husband, Bernard; a brother Paul Vanderpluym; and an infant sister.
She is survived by a son, Jim Morris of Peru; a daughter, Bea Ann Penn of Des Moines; a stepson, Tony Rees of Iowa; three sisters, Martena Mobley and Frances Ricker, both of Benton and Lucille Johnson of Lehigh; three grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to her family for local concerns.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset.
