Death of Mrs. Meacham

Mrs. Clarinda Meacham, one of the oldest women in Madison county, died Friday night, December 20th, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lloyd Wright, on East Jefferson street. Mrs. Meacham was 89 years of age, and four days previous to her death, became ill with bronchial pneumonia.

Mrs. Meacham was formerly Miss Clarinda McMillan, and was born May 6, 1840, in Brown county, Ohio. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John McMillan, came to this county in 1869, and they resided on a farm in Lincoln township. Later they moved to Winterset. Mr. and Mrs. Meacham were married in Illinois on July 28, 1859, and they were the parents of thirteen children, only four of whom survive the mother. They moved to Madison county in February 1878, and located on a farm near Pitzer, in Jackson township. With the exception of seven years, they resided in the Pitzer neighborhood, until Mr. Meacham’s death in 1916. Mrs. Meacham moved to Winterset at that time, and since her daughter, Mrs. Wright a family moved to Winterset four years ago, she has made her home with them.

The deceased is survived by four children: Mrs. Wright, of Winterset; Frank, of Salt Lake City, Ziba of Los Angeles, California and Mrs. Floy Darnall, of Portland, Oregon. The Rev. A. P. Keast, pastor of the Methodist church, conducted the funeral services at the Winterset Methodist church, Sunday afternoon, December 22, at 2 o’clock and burial was made in the Penn Center cemetery.

Mrs. Clarinda Meacham

Mrs. Clarinda Meacham, daughter of John and Harriett (Glaze/Glass) McMillen, was born in Brown county, Ohio, on May 6, 1840, and passed away at her home in Winterset, Iowa, on December 20, 1929, at the age of 89 years, 7 months and 14 days.

She lived with her parents in Brown county, Ohio, until she was about six years of age, when they moved to Warren county, Illinois. Here she stayed with them until July 28, 1859, when she was married to Achilles Morris Meacham.

To this union were born 13 children: Elza Walter, Ira, Carrie and Charles S., all whom died in infancy; Eva, wife of George Cross, Earl G., Albert, John A., and Harmon, (he last named deceased), Ziba, of Los Angeles, California; Floy Darnall, of Portland, Oregon; Frank R., of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Mrs. Virgie Wright, of Winterset.

Mr. and Mrs. Meacham came to Madison county, Iowa, in February of 1878, and located on a farm near Pitzer, in Jackson township. With the exception of seven years they resided in the Pitzer neighborhood until the death of Mr. Meacham, on March 12, 1916. Since that time she had made her home in Winterset.

Mrs. Meacham was a lifelong member of the church. For many years she was a member of the West Star church, and since coming to Winterset, a member of the Methodist Episcopal church here.

For the last fifteen years she had been a sufferer with poor eyesight, and it was with difficulty she could go anywhere. Yet, ever patient and cheerful, she never complained. Rev. A. F. Keast conducted the funeral services at the Methodist church, Sunday afternoon, December 22, at 2 o’clock and burial was at Penn Center.
