Thursday, May 24, 1900John Bancroft was born in Lincolnshire, England on November 19, 1824. He came to America in the Autumn of 1837, landing at New Orleans, and from there went to Dearborn County, Indiana. In 1847, upon his birthday, he married Elizabeth Johnson whith whom he had an aquaintance in England. He moved to Madison County in 1853 and for 47 years was a resident of Monroe Township, and died upon the old homestead on April 17th.
To his 1st marriage were born 4 children. On May 7th. 1857, his wife died and on the 24th day of the same month, his youngest child also died. On May 20th 1858, he married Mrs. Elizabeth Butler Chenoweth, who died on July 5, 1892. On May 12, 1893, he married Viola Joice. To the last marriage one child was born.
He leaves a wife and 4 children: George M., Fairhope, Alabama; Mrs. Walter Needs, Lorimor; Charles C., Lorimor; and the little girl, Mary Bertha.

The many friends of Mr. John Bancroft were pained to hear of his death on Monday night, at his home in Monroe township. His death was the result of a stroke of paralysis.
He was well known in Madison county having lived here for 47 years. He was born in England 75 years ago and came to this country at the age of 23. He was a member of the Christian church of this place, and the funeral services were held at the church at 2 o’clock Wednesday. His sons George Bancroft from Alabama, and Charlie Bancroft from Barney, with his daughter, Mrs. Walter Needs, from Lorimor, were in attendance upon the funeral.

Died, at his home in Monroe township, Tuesday, April 17, 1900, John Bancroft; aged 75 years and 5 months. The deceased was born in England, and came to America when 17 years old. Has been a resident of Monroe township for 47 years. Four living children survive him. The funeral occurred at the Christian church conducted by Rev. Follansbee assisted by Father Stowe and McMillan. A large number of his neighbors and friends were present.
