Obituary

In loving memory of W. H. Kipp who died August 4th, 1895.

Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep
From which none ever wake to weep.

William Henry Kipp was born in Oneida county, New York, April 14th, 1819.He lived in New York state until 18 years of age. He was born of parents in poor circumstances, and was their main support until their death.

He removed to Warren county, Illinois, in 1837, where he lived for 34 years. He then removed to Dexter, Dallas county, Iowa, living there only a few months, when he bought a farm four miles south of Dexter. Sold the Dexter farm for $50 per acre. Then buying a farm six and one half miles west of Winterset and bought his present home southwest of Winterset ten years ago, where he resided until his death.

He was married three times, his first and second wife are dead. Had two children by his first wife, both of whom are dead. Had two children by his second wife, one of whom is dead, the daughter Mrs. Mary Holmes living in Des Moines. He married his present wife, Anna Underwood, at Monmouth, Illinois, July 4, 1861. Had by this union seven children, Mrs. Sadie E. Forbes, Oscar L. Kipp, Jerome Kipp, Will H. Kipp, Mrs. Hattie R. Snyder, Edith L. Kipp, Eddie Kipp, all of whom were at his bedside during his illness except Oscar, who resides in Wyoming.

He was a conscientious Christian, being a member of the Presbyterian church since eighteen years of age. Was a self made man – a man of limited education, but a deep thinking man, has written several articles that are worthy of perusal, was a kind, liberal husband and father; a man who loved his home, was a good neighbor, a strong republican. He died August 4, 1895, was 76 years of age, has been in failing health for a year past.

He leaves one sister, Mrs. Ellen George, who is the last of seven children. He suffered terribly in his last illness, was very patient and cheerful. Died of dropsy and heart failure.

The funeral was held at the house at 10 a. m. August 6th, 1895. Rev. Holmes read the xc psalm, taking for the leading thought the 12th verse, “So teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” His remarks were for the benefit of the living. A large concourse of friends followed the remains to the grave.

Mr. William H. Kipp died of dropsy at an early hour last Sunday, at his home just southwest of the city, after a long illness, aged 76. He was born in Oneida county, New York, in 1819, from which locality he moved to Illinois, and came from there to this vicinity in 1871. He first located at Dexter, and afterwards in Penn and Jackson townships, in this county, where he followed the business of farming. Next he lived for a time in Winterset, and then removed to his farm southwest of town, where he died.

He was married to his present wife in 1862, that being his third marriage. Besides his wife, he leaves eight children, four sons and four daughters; all of whom except the youngest son and the youngest daughter are grown to maturity and married. Most of them live in this vicinity. Mr. Kipp was known ads a man of active and industrious habits, personal integrity, and as a kind and accommodating neighbor. The funeral was held today at the home.
