LaVern “Breeze” D. Purscell, 66, of Winterset died Dec. 6, 2006, at the Indianola Good Samaritan Center.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 11, at Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset with the Rev. Bob Epperson officiating. Burial was at Primitive Baptist Cemetery, Union Township, Madison County, with military graveside services performed by VFW Post 8142 and American Legion Post 184, both of Winterset.

LaVern Purscell was born Oct. 25, 1940, in Winterset to Lonnie D. and Leota L. (Heath) Purscell. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1957, working as a mechanic. As a career soldier, LaVern served during the Vietnam War and resided in several foreign countries and on several military bases in the United States until his retirement in 1979. Following his retirement, LaVern continued to work at military bases as a mechanic. He lived in Radcliffe, Ky., before moving back to Winterset in 2003. He was a life member of the VFW and a supporter of the Boy Scouts of America.He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lorn Purscell.
He is survived by two sons, Daryl Purscell and Daniel Purscell, both of Winterset; one daughter, Donna Grimes of Perryton, Texas; one stepson, Herbert Aulbach of Germany; four brothers, Laurel Purscell of Winterset, Leonard Purscell of Patterson, Leon Purscell of Altoona and Lester Purscell of Earlham; four sisters, Lois Giles and Linda Smith, both of Creston, LaVonne Jacobe of Van Wert, and Loretta Solt of Lorimor; and three stepgrandchildren.
