JOINT FUNERAL SERVICES FOR MOTHER AND SON

Word has been received here of the death of Mrs. Joe Spurgin, former Winterset resident, who died June 24th, and her son John Palmer Spurgin, aged 54 who died suddenly of a heart attack, the Tuesday following, June 26th. Both resided in Eugene, Oregon.

Joint funeral services were held June 27th in the England Funeral Home in Eugene, and burial was in that city.

The funeral for Mrs. Spurgin had originally been planned for Tuesday, but upon the death of the son, it was postponed a day.

Mrs. Spurgin who was 73 years of age, was born in Mahaska county, Iowa. She was married to Joe M. Spurgin of Winterset August 10, 1904. Mabel C. Spurgin was a daughter of Palmer Rumford, also former Madison county residents. Her husband is a brother of Charles Spurgin, former resident who now resides in Meriden.

The family moved to Eugene in 1909 and that place has since been their home. She was a member and served as secretary of the Presbyterian church in Eugene, 23 years.

In addition to her husband, she leaves a daughter Alice Barnett of Winchester Bay, Oregon; a granddaughter, Beatrice Anderson, three great grandchildren, two sisters, Sylvia Hill of Los Gatos, California and Golda Marian Garrettson of Vallejo, California and two brothers, Lawrence Rumford of Portland, and Eugene Rumford of Eugene. She also leaves a sister-in-law, Gertrude Rumford of Ottawa, Kansas.

Her son John Palmer Spurgin was also a member of the Central Presbyterian church in Eugene, and the Knights of Pythias. Survivors include his widow, the former Evelyn Towers, whom he married August 21, 1929 and a daughter Mrs. Beatrice Anderson and her three children.
