Death of Alfred Pierce

The death of Alfred Pierce on last Thursday, causes the loss to Madison county of another old resident. He came from Clayton county to this one in 1865 and settled in Jefferson township where he lived continuously until his death from valvular heart trouble. Mr. Pierce was an old soldier and a highly esteemed citizen. Funeral services were held Sunday at Union Chapel in Jefferson township.

Death of ALFRED PIERCE

Madison county lost a worthy citizen in Alfred Pierce, who died at his home in Jefferson township on Feb. 1st after an hour's illness from heart trouble.

He was born in Franklin county, New York, Nov. 16, 1848, his age at death being 69 years, 2 months and 15 days. Mr. Pierce was a man of loyal spirit, manifested by his service in the civil war with a New York regiment. In 1867, he left New York, locating in Clayton county, Iowa, finally moving to Madison county, Jefferson township, being his choice for a home. Here he resided until his death, surrounded by old neighbors and friends, who knew, from years of close association, his real worth as an honest, upright, honorable man, unpretentious but highly esteemed. Such characters are a genuine loss to the community.

His marriage to Miss Addie Wright occurred March 15, 1872. A family of six children was born to them. One daughter and three sons, with their mother, survive Mr. Pierce; also two sisters, one brother and ten grandchildren.

The funeral services at Union Chapel church, Jefferson Township, were conducted by Rev. Fleury of Van Meter.
