GLADYS STEELE CARR
Mount Ayr

Gladys Steele Carr was born February 21, 1913 in Winterset, Iowa. She was the daughter of Delbert Lloyd Clark and Ruth Ann Chapman Clark, Gladys died March 7, 2003 in Mount Ayr, Iowa.

Gladys attended Iowa State teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa following her graduation from high school in Winterset. She returned to Winterset to start her elementary teaching career. On June 9, 1934 Gladys married Hugh H. Steele from Maloy, Iowa. Hugh was the junior high school principal in Winterset at the time. Gladys and Hugh had one son, Dan born October 22, 1937, in 1942 they moved to Mt. Ayr where Hugh became the high school principal, and later superintendent of schools. Hugh died September 6, 1949.

February 6, 1954 Gladys married Patrick F. Carr in Maloy, Iowa. Pat was a rural mail carrier for many years. They lived in Maloy until after his retirement in 1981 they moved to 116 Dunning Avenue in Mt. Ayr. Pat died August 16, 1999.

Gladys son, Dan, practiced density in Cedar Falls, Iowa for 31 years prior to his death September 7, 1997.

Gladys taught elementary school in Mt. Ayr and Maloy. She retired in 1963 after 17 ½ years of teaching.

Caleb and Ruth Clark, Gladys great-grandparents were in the first small group of settlers in Madison County, Iowa. They were stone masons and built the first stone house in Winterset. Their decedents built, in their memory, the stone tower which stands in Winterset city Park.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, step-mother Jessie Clark, both husbands and her son. Also preceding her were her sisters, Editha, Beulah, and Grace and 2 half brothers, Merle and Carl. She is survived by one half brother, Harold Clark of Los Altos, CA, daughter-in-law Phyllis Steele, 4 grand children, Sandra, Paul, Pamela, and Tony, 5 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials can be made to the University of Iowa Foundation for the Dan D. Steele Memorial Scholarship at the College of Dentistry. Memorials can be sent directly to the University of Iowa foundation or to Phyllis Steele, 2207 Oxford Lane, Cedar Falls, IA 50613.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday March 13,; 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph catholic church in Mount Ayr, IA. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Maloy, IA.
