MORTUARY

John W. Mabbitt

John W., son of Wm. and Samantha Mabbitt, was born in Madison county, Iowa, August 5, 1872. He was one of a family of eleven children and there were also four half-brothers and sisters.

He attended school and grew to manhood on the home place in Jackson township. He was married to Ardelia Lamb, February 13, 1896. To this union eight children were born: Oscar, of Winterset; Tom, of Van Meter; Mrs. Vada Criss and Mrs. Bertha Shade, of Winterset, and Sylvia, Wesley, Russell and Irene in the home.

He had been for a number of years, a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of Winterset. He was known as a kind and good neighbor always ready to help in time of sickness. He had for many years been in poor health, but never gave up, continually working beyond his strength. He had been much worse in the past few months and a week ago became bedfast. On Sunday, July 28th, his brothers of the I. O. O. F. arranged for him to go to the Methodist hospital for better care. And there he passed away the next day on Monday, July 29th, aged 56 years, 11 months and 24 days.

He leaves besides his wife and children, eight grandchildren, three brothers, Marcus, of Wyoming; Anthony and Charles, of Redfield, and one half-brother, Columbus Mabbitt, of Nebraska.

The Winterset Odd Fellows conducted the service in Tidrick’s funeral home, Wednesday afternoon, July 31st, and the burial was in the Jackson township cemetery, north of Pitzer.
