Erma Mae Martens, 90, died Nov. 26, 2006, at West Bridge Care & Rehabilitation in Winterset.

Funeral services were held today (Wednesday, Nov. 29) at Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham with Pastor Richard Jordan officiating. Burial was at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in rural Van Meter.

Mae Martens was born April 6, 1916, to Harry and Martha (Allen) Koboldt of rural Cooper and was a graduate of Earlham High School. Mae worked for a livestock buyer and at Brown’s Buy Low Grocery, both in Earlham. On Sept. 21, 1960, she and Clarence Martens were united in marriage at the Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Van Meter. Following their marriage, they farmed near Earlham where she was involved in the egg business for the Hy Line Company. Mae also was a very active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two sisters, Myra Spencer and infant Pearl Koboldt; and two brothers, Earl Koboldt and Wayne Koboldt. She is survived by two sisters, Amy Leggett of Winterset and Nina Davis of Oskaloosa.

Funeral services were held for Erma Mae Martens on November 29, 2006 at 10 a.m. at the Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham, Iowa.

Pastor Richard Jordan officiated. Organist was Bryan Martens who played organ solos “Abide With Me” and “Blessed Assurance”.

Pallbearers were Larry Spencer, Lee Spencer, Bruce Koboldt, Jim Cade, Steve Martens, and Frederick Martens.

Erma Mae Martens was born the daughter of Harry and Martha Allen Koboldt at the family farm near Cooper Iowa on April 6, 1916. Mae as she was commonly known, died at the Westbridge Care Center in Winterset on November 26, 2006 at the age of 90 years, 7 months and 20 days.

Mae graduated from the Earlham High School. She worked for a livestock buyer in Earlham and at Brown’s By Low Grocery in Earlham. Mae and Clarence Martens were married on September 21, 1960 at the Trinity Lutheran Church near Van Meter. They farmed near Earlham, celebrating 32 years of marriage at the time of Clarence’s death in 1992. Mae was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and was very active in the life of the church. She took an active roll on the farm taking care of the chickens, raising eggs for the Hy Line Co., growing a large garden, cooking and quilting. Mae was well known for her homemade cookies, especially chocolate chip cookies. Mae always enjoyed playing with the new litter of kittens each spring.

Mae is survived by her sisters Amy Leggett of Winterset, Iowa and Nina Davis of Oskaloosa, Iowa as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Harry and Martha Koboldt; husband Clarence Martens; sister Myra Spencer; brother Earl Koboldt; brother Wayne Koboldt; and infant sister Pearl Koboldt.

Interment was held at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in rural Van Meter, Iowa. Kuhn Funeral Homes was in charge of arrangements.
