Page 2Fredrick William, son of John and Harriet Franklin Tyer, was born at Milltown, New Jersey, June 1, 1848, and departed this life at his home in Adel, April 10, 1929, at the age of 80 years, 10 months and 10 days, being the fourth of a family of seven, only one sister surviving.
About the middle of March, he suffered with a severe attack of his old trouble, asthma, but had somewhat improved and had been able to walk several blocks to town each day. Wednesday morning, about 8:30 o’clock, he was attacked with a sinking spell while sitting in a chair. His wife helped him to a cot and called help. The doctor arrived in a few minutes, but efforts to revive him proved futile. He passed away within an hour.
He leaves to mourn his loss besides his wife, three sons and three daughters: Burt and Ray, of Adel; Edward, of LuVerne, Minnesota; Edith Tyer and Mrs. Mabel Kesting of Reinbeck, and Mrs. Myrl Leach, of Winterset; 19 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; an invalid sister, Mary Tyer, of Adel; a niece, Mrs. Minnie DeMar, of Winterset, who made her home with Mr. Tyer’s family for several years; a nephew, Will Tyer, of Des Moines, and other nieces and nephews residing in the west and a host of friends in Madison and Dallas counties.
Mr. Tyer joined the Methodist church when a young man and upon moving to Madison county became a member of the United Presbyterian church of Winterset.
At the age of seven years, he came to a farm northwest of Adel, with his parents. The family came in what was known in those days as a “prairie schooner.” In early youth and manhood he assisted his father in breaking prairie and other work of pioneer life. His name and picture can be found on the records as an early pioneer of Dallas county.
On December 20, 1874, he was united in marriage to Ida May Hoyt, and to this union eight children were born. Two have preceded their father in death, Harlan, who died in infancy, and Vernon Howard, at the age of 21 years.
Mr. Tyer, with the help of his sons, farmed in Dallas county until 1901, when he moved to Madison county and resided on a farm six miles north of Winterset, and was never happier than when his boys and girls were with him, working and planning for the future. In 1909 he gave up the farm and moved to Winterset and was engaged in the grocery business for a number of years. On account of failing health in 1919, he was obliged to give up active business. Although in poor health and often suffering and spending many sleepless nights, Mr. Tyer was always glad to have a chat with friends, even to the very last.
The Rev. W. C. Porter conducted funeral services at the Fairview church Friday, April 13th, at 2:30 o’clock. He was assisted by the Rev. W. G. Warren, of Adel.
