John E. Conrad one of ten children, seven daughters and three sons born to Newton and Mary Conrad was born 2nd month 13th 1869 in West Virginia.

The father and mother died when John was a small boy and with the breaking up of this home he was left without a real home. Aside from a short time spent with a sister the greater part of his boyhood and young manhood was denied the love and comfort of a home.

When a young man he came to Earlham, Iowa, and in 1896 he was married to Lelia Johnson. Three children were given to them. After being without a home of his own for so long and possessing an unusual love for home. This home and his loved ones became the center of his love and devotion and he never cared to leave these only at the call of duty.

He was converted while still living in West Virginia and after his marriage he united with the Earlham Friends Church, and while he did not take an active part in the work of the church in his home he often spoke of his faith in the church and loved to hear the singing of the gospel songs.

John Conrad was one of the pioneer carpenters of Earlham, and has had a part in the building of the greater part of the business houses and many of the residences of Earlham.

For four years John has been a great sufferer unable a greater part of the time to leave his home or to have much company, but the wife has been a constant companion giving untiringly of her love and care.

All of his loved ones sought in every way to bring comfort to him through all the long weary days of suffering and did all that loving hearts and medical help could to bring him back to health and strength, but to no avail. The past two weeks he rapidly grew worse and on November 8th at the age of 60 years, 8 months and 26 days he quietly fell asleep.

He leaves the wife, two sons, Leo and Rolland and their wives, of Earlham, the daughter Evalyn Cook and husband, of Adel, one grandchild, four sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services for the deceased were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Earlham Friends Church, with Rev. S. N. Hester officiating assisted by Rev. Riddle. Interment was in the Earlham Cemetery.
