Charles C. Thrift was born in Ohio, November 2, 1855, and died at his home in Lincoln township, November 13, 1933, aged 78 years, and 11 days. He was the son of Brown Thrift and Elizabeth Leonard Thrift, members of two pioneer families of Ohio, who had a prominent part in the affairs of that state. At the age of nine he came alone to Iowa, and lived a few years with his uncle Dr. Leonard. He loved to tell of these years when he herded his uncle’s sheep on the unfenced prairies west of Winterset, and south of the Bluff road. Later he went back to his parents in Ohio. In 1869 he returned to Iowa with them by way of the covered wagon. They located in Lincoln township, which township has been his home most of the time since.

On December 27, 1880 he was united in marriage with Dellia M. Herrell. This union was blest with four children: Blanche, Chester Benton, Lela and Guy. The wife and daughters preceded him in death. The older daughter Blanche, who was Mrs. Elwood Bertholf, in 1902. Six weeks later his wife died. In 1930 Lela, who was Mrs. Noah Blosser, was taken by death.

He is survived by his two sons, Chester Benton and Guy. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Mary McCall of Lorimor, and a brother, B. L. Thrift of Winterset. There is one grandson, Wayne, son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Thrift of Winterset.

Mr. Thrift’s life was marked by his industry, honesty and great love of home. He was a genial man, having the rare talent for making and keeping friends. He was a good neighbor, never too busy or tired to cheer up the discouraged and lend a hand. Theirs was a happy home.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 15th. A short service at the home at 1:00 o’clock and at the First Methodist church in Winterset at 2:00. Rev. L. H. Lanning had charge of the services. Interment was made in the Winterset cemetery.
