E. D. HARTLEY Of Winterset Dies

Edmond D. Hartley, a well known Winterset resident for half a century, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 1958, at the home of his son, Edward J. Hartley, in Union township. He was 91 years of age, and had been in delicate health for many years.

Mr. Hartley was a native of Omaha, where he was born Aug. 7, 1866, one of 11 children born to Edmond and Catherine Commons Hartley. His parents had emigrated from Ireland, where his father was born in County Kilkenny, and his mother in Roscommon.

When he was 4 years old he came with his parents to Monroe township in this county, where his early life was spent. He was married at Winterset on Oct. 10, 1898, to LaVerna Smith. The next spring they moved to a farm on the West Star road, where they lived until 1908, when they moved to Winterset. Since then his home has been in this community, with the exception of one year on a farm in Pocahontas county.

He engaged in the real estate business in Winterset for many years, before failing health forced his retirement. Last spring he moved from Winterset to the home of his son in Union township, where his death occurred.

Mrs. Hartley died Jan. 26, 1954, just four years, to the day, prior to the death of her husband.

He leaves two sons, Jno. N. Hartley of Winterset and Edward J. Hartley of Union township; a sister, Mrs. Mary Carney of Des Moines; and five grandchildren, Mrs. Mary Catherine Pauletti, who is with her husband and has been stationed in Alabama, Edward J. Hartley, Jr., of Winterset, Diane Hartley, who is in nurse's training at Davenport; and John Kevin and Michaelyn Ann Hartley of Winterset.

Funeral services were held Tuesday from St. Joseph's Catholic church in Winterset, with requiem Mass conducted by the pastor, the Rev. John Higgins. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
