Thurston Claude Burkholder, 78, of Winterset, died of complications of dementia Sept. 24, 1995 at the Winterset Care Center South. Funeral services will be Sept. 29 at Collins Funeral Home in Winterset. Services will be at 2 p.m. officiated by the Rev. Bill Branson. Visitation will be Sept. 28, noon to 8 p.m. Military graveside services will be held and burial will be at the Highland Memorial Gardens in Des Moines.
He was born in Sioux Rapids on May 13, 1917 to Guy Abner and Leona Ann (Hammond) Burkholder. He married Evelyn West on July 12, 1945 in Des Moines. He later married Helen Hulbert Shehan on Nov. 27, 1975 in Des Moines. He was a retired meter reader for Iowa Power. He had lived in Winterset the past five years. He was a member of the Assembly of God in Des Moines and was a Army veteran if WWII. He had been an ex-Chaplin of Polk County American Legion; and a member of the Young of Heart of Iowa Power; American Legion Post No184; volunteer for VA Hospital in Des Moines; International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 499; and Boy Scout Pack and assistant troop leader.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; one brother; one sister; and one granddaughter.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Helen Leona Burkholder of Winterset; two sons, Lonnie Dean Burkholder and wife Diana of Indianola and Larry Burkholder and wife Suzanne of Westlake Village, Calif.; one daughter, Cherry McElwee and husband Mike of Des Moines. Seven stepchildren; six grandchildren; 26 step grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; 41 step-great-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren.
