Kenneth Moore, Cedar Rapids

Kenneth Merrill Moore, 63, of Cedar Rapids died Oct. 14, 1998, at his home following a brief illness.

An informal party and celebration of Kenneth's life was held Monday, Oct. 19 at Clark Alumni House on the Coe College campus in Cedar Rapids.

Kenneth Moore was born July 22, 1935 in Massena to Thad A. and Fern (Schutz) Moore. He was a 1952 graduate of Macksburg High School and received a B.S. in secondary education, a B.S. in social sciences, a master's degree in secondary education and a master's degree in history from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo. On June 20, 1970 he married Elizabeth Ann Gill in St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. He taught for several years at Franklin and Harding middle schools, Cedar Rapids, and was a social studies consultant for the Linn County School System, which later became the Joint County School System. He taught wine appreciation continuing education classes at Kirkwood Community College for more than 20 years and at his death was teaching wine appreciation in the Culinary Arts Program at Kirkwood. He also was a wine consultant and educator for Dimitri Wine and Spirits Inc. Ken was a member of the Linn County Democratic Central Committee and served as chairman, was president of the American Federation of Teachers for the Cedar Rapids Community School District, a longtime member (also served as president) of the Iowa Council of Teachers of Social Studies, a member of the National Council of Teachers of Social Studies, and authored the American Studies Program for Cedar Rapids.

He is survived by his wife; a son, David (wife Shantelle) of Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Sarah of Lexington, Ky.; his mother Fern Shearer of Panora; one brother, Carroll Moore of Carson City, Nev.; three sisters, Anne Deaver of Lansdale, Pa., Mary Carper of Panora and Rose Nelson of Stanton; and one granddaughter.
