Phil Gilpin was an actor and has not lived in Winterset for twenty years. Two other brothers, Neptune and Ellisersie, both actors, died as suddenly as he. Death Of PHIL GILPIN

A message reached Winterset early on Monday morning, announcing the sudden death of Phil Gilpin of New York City on Sunday.

Finley Gilpin or Phil, the name by which he was known in Winterset, was born here, being the youngest son of the late Major T. C. Gilpin.

He graduated from the local high school in 1891, and five years later located in New York City where his older brother, Victor Gilpin, was making his home.

Phil chose the stage as his profession and at the time of his death he was engaged in musical work. Gifted in an unusual degree, Mr. Gilpin possessed a baritone voice of rich sweetness and power combined with a sympathetic quality rarely found and a magnetic personality. These natural endowments made him popular from boyhood. Always genial and adaptable, he won many friends wherever he went.

For years he has been associated with good musical organizations, several of which have toured the western states. For the past few seasons, he has been a vocalist in the Winter Garden in New York City.

Mr. Gilpin is the third son of the family to be taken by death, the father dyng four years ago.

His wife is a daughter of Henry Hill of Winterset.

The remaining members of his family are his mother, Mrs. Susan Gilpin, her daughters, Mrs. Elihu Bean of Shoshone, Wy., and Mrs. Robt. Cooper of Winterset, and one son, Victor Gilpin of New York.

The remains are to be brought here for burial tomorrow. Funeral services will be held at the old Gilpin home.
