C. Raymond Spurgin, 92, of Winterset died Feb. 26, 2006, at Winterset Care Center South.
Funeral services were held today (Wednesday, March 1) at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.
Raymond Spurgin was born May 20, 1913, in Lincoln Township, Madison County, to Charles Ellsworth and Georgia (Kensler) Spurgin. On Nov. 5, 1939, he was united in marriage to Della Mae Leinard at the Winterset First United Methodist Church. In their early married life, Raymond did custom butchering in Cherokee with his father and later for the Winterset Locker Plant. He, along with his wife, farmed in Madison, Warren and Polk counties. He also bred and trained registered Pinto and Painted horses and Welch ponies for driving and riding. Prior to moving to Winterset in 1992, he lived in Mitchellville for 25 years. His memberships included several Bible study groups in Mitchellville, Des Moines and Winterset; Winterset First United Methodist Church; Mitchellville Methodist Church (where he was a lay leader, chairman of the church board, Sunday school teacher and member of the choir); Heartland Singers; Welch Pony Society; as well as the state and national Pinto and Painted horse associations.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Warren Spurgin, and two sisters, Lorraine Spurgin and Henrietta McKirgan.
He is survived by his wife, Della Mae, of Winterset; and three sisters, Mary Clague of Winterset, Betty Ballantyne of Hesperia, Calif., and Barbara Holmes of Des Moines.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Winterset First United Methodist Church or the Friends of the Winterset Public Library.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset.
