M. R. HASSEL Of Winterset Dies

Served as Superintendent of Winterset Schools For 11 Years

Maurice R. Hassel, retired Winterset educator, died last Thursday, July 3, 1958, in a Des Moines hospital, following a short illness. He was 87 years of age.

Mr. Hassel had spent most of his life-time in the teaching profession, serving as a superintendent of schools for 35 years. For 11 years, from 1918 to 1929, he was superintendent of the Winterset public schools.

He was a native of New Jersey, where he was born near Pattonburg on Aug. 14, 1870. He came to Center Point, in Linn county, Iowa, in 1879 with his mother. He graduated from high school there in 1889. He also graduated from Cedar Falls Normal college in 1894, and from Des Moines university in 1916.

After his school career ended, he served as bookkeeper at the Palace garage here for 21 years, before retiring in 1951.

Mr. Hassel was married Dec. 27, 1894, to Fannie A. Fairbanks at Center Point. They were parents of three children, one son dying in infancy. The wife and mother died in 1918.

His second marriage occurred June 2, 1923, to Dess Crosby. Her death occurred in 1948.

He was a member of the Winterset Presbyterian church for 25 years, then transferred to the Winterset Methodist church where he was a member 20 years.

Surviving are his children, James of Davenport, Blanche of Winterset, and Maurice of Des Moines; six grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held from the Winterset Methodist church Monday, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. W. W. Steinmetz. The body was taken to Center Point for grave-side services and burial.
