Jay C. Painter

Jay, son of Lewis and Mary Painter, was born in Pottawattamie county, Iowa, October 14, 1881. His boyhood was spent on the farm. When 18 years of age he moved with the family to Cass county, Iowa, where he was married to grace Thomason February 1, 1905, at Atlantic.

To them two daughters were born, Maxine and Meyrie, both in the home.

They came to Madison county in 1916 where they have since made their home. All his life Jay has been a thrifty farmer. He was quiet and unassuming, always busy with his own affairs, but never too busy to be a good neighbor. One very close to him said he was never known to speak ill of another.

His brother said: “As a boy I can never remember having a quarrel with Jay and since then we have worked together; bought and sold together, and I cannot remember him ever having said an unpleasant word to me.”

He loved his home and wanted it to be truly a home, busy as he was he took time to keep it up and planned in so many ways to add to the home life of his family.

He was in the best of health when injured in a runaway on February 26th. After much suffering, making a wonderful fight to live, he passed from this life in the Des Moines hospital on April 4, at the age of 49 years, five months and 21 days.

He leaves beside his wife and daughters two brothers, Ira of Madison county, Burleigh of Cass county, and one sister, Mrs. Jennie Grulke of Madison county. One brother, Jim, passed away in 1925, and his sister, Lydia Leonard, passed away in 1901. He also leaves many other relatives and many friends.

Rev. H. L. Olmstead conducted the services in the Winterset Church of Christ at 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, and then drove with the family and friends to Lewis, Iowa. Mr. Painter’s former home, where a service was held in the Christian church, and burial was made in the Lewis cemetery.
