Page 1Death of Thomas Steele
Hugh Steele, principal of the Winterset Junior high school, was summoned to Cedar Falls, last Thursday by the critical illness of his brother, Thomas Steele, who was a student at the Iowa State Teachers college. Thomas was stricken with an attack of acute bright’s disease, Wednesday evening, and in the evening, had been at the college library. He became ill, on the way home, and fell unconscious at the door of his fraternity house. He died Saturday afternoon, shortly after one o’clock. The body was taken back to the Steele home, near Maloy, and funeral services were held at the Baptist church at Mt. Ayr, Monday afternoon, March 2, at 2:30 o’clock, and burial was made in the Mt. Ayr cemetery. Six members of the A.D.A. fraternity at Cedar Falls served as pall bearers.
The young man who was 24 years of age, is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymer Steele, his brother, Hugh of Winterset, and four sisters: Miss Marguerite, who was also a student at the Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, Mrs. Mabel Thompson of Des Moines, and Mrs. Belle Corneilson and Mrs. Marie Swanson of Maloy.
Those driving from here to attend services, were Charles Rowe, F. L. Drennan, Lloyd Montross, Harry Tidrick, Dr. and Mrs. H. F. Ilgenfritz, Mrs. Mary Monaghan and son, John, Mrs. P. J. Cunningham and daughter, Dorothy, Mrs. Lester Stemen and daughter, Virginia, Miss Harriett Woods and Guy Cummins, Gerald Bedwell, Claude Alexander, and Paul Newton. Donal Lillard accompanied Mr. Steele to Cedar Falls, and remained with him, until Monday night, when he returned to Winterset, to resume his work, in the high school. Mr. Steele plans to return to Winterset the last of the week.
