Page 1Miss Sara L. Rhodes Dies
Miss Sara L. Rhodes, who has been residing here with her sister, Mrs. A. E. Goshorn, the past three months, died last Thursday morning, April 23. Miss Rhodes, who was 55 years of age, has been a member of the Boone faculty for the past 12 years, and was head of the history and social science department of the high school. She was forced to give up that work on account of her health, however, and has been in failing health since she came here in February.
Miss Rhodes was born and raised in Poweshiek county and attended the Toledo high school. She attended the Iowa State Teachers college at Cedar Falls and received the Master of Didactics degree in 1911. She was also a student at the State University of Iowa and was awarded her B. A. degree there in 1915.
The Rev. Paul Main Fowler, pastor of the First Presbyterian church conducted her funeral services on Friday afternoon at the Ramsey-Richards funeral home. The body was taken to Grinnell Saturday and the Rev. W. J. Stewart, a former Winterset resident, conducted brief services at the grave there at 10 o’clock.
Miss Rhodes is survived by a niece whom she as taken care of the past 11 years, Miss Margaret Welch; three sisters, Mrs. Myra Carlstedt of Wenatchee, Washington; Mrs. Mary Walcott, Cheyenne, Wyoming, Mrs. Goshorn of Winterset; two brothers, Wilbur Rhodes of Gilman and Arthur Rhodes of Carpenter, Wyoming.
The relatives who lived at a distance were unable to come for the services but five friends from Boone drove down for the funeral: Mrs. Minnie Seymour and daughter, Miss Martha, Miss Mattie Duckworth, Miss Anna Crawford and Miss Josephine Weston. Mrs. Goshorn served dinner for them on Friday evening. She and Mr. Goshorn accompanied the body to Grinnell Saturday.
