C. E. SPURGIN DIES AT AMES

Charles E. Spurgin of Ames, a well-known Madison county resident most of his life, died last Thursday, Oct. 21, at Ames. He was 96 years of age.

His death occurred just 15 days after the death of his wife, Georgia Kensler Spurgin, which occurred at Ames also.

Mr. Spurgin was born near Peru Nov. 15, 1874, a son of John J. and Sarah Bishop Spurgin. Sixty years of his life were spent in Madison county. For many years he served as clerk of the Madison county district court in Winterset.

He was a member of the Baptist church.

Mr. Spurgin was married at Winterset in 1905 to Georgia Ann Kensler. Her death occurred Oct. 6 of this year.

Surviving are a son, Charles Raymond Spurgin of Mitchellville; four daughters, Mrs. Mary Clague of Ames, Mrs. Henrietta McKirgan and Mrs. Barbara Holmes, both of Des Moines, and Mrs. Betty Ballantyne of Norwalk, Calif. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lorraine, and a son, Warren Spurgin.

He also leaves 13 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday from the Collins Funeral home in Winterset, conducted by the Rev. J. Kenneth Huyck. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
