C. Katherine Ellington Mills of 422 West Jefferson died Saturday, Nov. 1 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines at the age of 84. she had lived in Winterset most of her life.

The daughter of William Minier and Mary Belle Poston Ellington, she was born on June 19, 1896 in Tazwell County, Illinois. She moved with her family to a farm south of Winterset in 1909 and to Winterset a year later. She graduated from Winterset High School in 1914 and fromn Capital City Commercial College in 1915. On Nov. 12, 1916, she was united in marriage to F. Raymond Mills and he preceded her in death on Nov. 15, 1963. They lived in Winterset, except for 1-1/2 years in St. Charles and three years in Lacona.

Mrs. Mills was a member of the North Ward Parent-Teacher Association and served at the district and state levels for 30 years in both appointive and elective positions, including the office of president of the Iowa Parent-Teacher Association. She was a Past Worthy Matron and life member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Iris Club, L.O. Club, Iowa Society of Mental Health, Iowa Council for Better Education, Business and Professional Women's Federation of Iowa, Iowa Press Women's Association, and Winterset Toastmistress Club. She was a member of the First Christian Church.

Mrs. Mills assisted with the organization of the original Madison County Council of Republican Women and served as the first president. She later held office in the Iowa Federation of Republican Women and served as vice chairwoman of the Madison County Republican Central Committee for several years. In 1947 she began to serve as a clerk in the Iowa Senate during legislative sessions and continued to do so through 1965.

Surviving are two sons, R. Ellington Mills of Indianola and Frank W. "Bill" Mills of Cottonwood, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a half-brother, Sam Link.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, at the First Christian Church with Rev. David Livingston officiating. Burial was at the Winterset Cemetery.
